Long time no news.

In the end, I have assembled my xemtex bundle. I won't maintain fptex
anymore the way I did it. There are some explanations on the new web
pages. The fptex web site will be redirected to the xemtex pages.

http://www.metz.supelec.fr/~popineau/xemtex-1.html

People are welcome to download, try and report about the xemtex bundle.
Stay tuned about the web pages. A new mailing list will be set up soon.

Best regards,

Dear Fabrice: I was sorry to get the official death certificate for
fpTeX. But I knew it was coming. It is always hard to see friends,
relatives, love ones, or things one likes to go away.

I liked fpTeX since I met it for the first time. For me, it was love
at first sight.

I want to thank you for your work. You have been very helpful
whenever I requested your support.

I read your reasons to stop the support fpTeX. I understand some of
your frustration. But no matter what, thanks again for your help.

Now, the issue is what to adopt XEmTeX or MikTeX? I was once on the
MikTeX side and I do not have fun memories of it. So I am tempted to
try the XEmTeX bundle.

The invitation to visit our Campus and my Dept is still standing.

Best regards

Thanks a lot for you nice words (and for the invitation!).

But let's see the good part of this move: there is room for improvement
without being tied up with texlive releases.

One thing that will probably come not too far is the ability to install
the package without xemacs.

Best regards,

Fabrice

That's good. I am accustomed to using TextPad as my editor, and I have
no desire to use or even install xemacs.

Hi,

I have used fptex for years (maybe 10 years) and I really liked it. Thanks for your work all those years.

Best regards

Hi,

I moved from DOS-based emtex to fpTeX on Windows because of its similar
look-and-feel to teTeX on Linux. I have similar setup on both Win32 and
Linux. All my PostScript-related files built on emtex installed without
problem on fpTeX and I always build my packages on fpTeX before moving
them onto teTeX.

It's a sad day, no doubt but thank you so much for your works all those
years of my happy LaTeXing. I'll archive and preserve the current version,
just in case.

Cheers

Hello
Very glad to read that news. Thank you for your work in the past and
thank you for not giving up faced with the TeXLive troubles.

I (after reading texlive.org mailing list for a couple of month)
fully agree with your motivation to switch your way to work.

Our faculty of mathematics will stay with TeXLive f?r linux and I am
sure we stay with xemtex on windows. I could not test the new
installer yet but tested the older Version 1 - with good results.

There seems to be some idea that TeX Live and XemTeX are going
in different directions. They are not. Unless I have completely
misunderstood Fabrice's plans, he is compiling basically the same source
code
as TeXLive (ie a web2c/kpathsea-based system) for Windows. He
may fork that code, and proceed with developments faster or slower
than Olaf Weber, but the essence remains the same.

TeX live has no troubles :-}

indeed, i can confirm that fabrice's binaries work well in the web2c & tds
environment

the only tricky area may be that pool files and formats are no longer sharable
(not that i shared them anyway -) so that platform specific web2c paths are needed

Basically, the same direction.

I would rather say that it is already a fork and the merge never
happened. I won't take over Olaf's work, rather follow him and stay
compatible with web2c/kpathsea. However the rest of the stuff may vary,
especially the teTeX compatible one (fmtutil, updmap, etc.).
